A few months ago ISN introduced you to Michelle Szulc, an aspiring and rising young singer who regulalry belts out the national anthems at a range of sporting events.  Michelle is looking to run for Miss BC 2012 this season and provides us with an update on her activities.

Hey Island Sports News Fans!

I hope you all enjoyed reading my first article regarding anthem singing from back in December 2011.  You will be happy to know that I am continually keeping busy with singing anthems and performing during intermissions.

Since December, I have been singing consistently for the same teams (WHL Vancouver Giants, SFU Varsity and Club Sports, BCHL Coquitlam Express and Surrey Eagles, PIJHL North Delta Devils), and have also been involved in some new events!

Back in January, I sang the anthem for the British Columbia Major Midget League all-star game, and last weekend for Hockey Night in Langley featuring the Greater Vancouver Canadians and Valley West Hawks (performing the anthem and during both intermissions).

I was also invited to sing as a special guest at Hockey Day in Canada that happened at the Richmond Olympic Oval. I was able to meet and speak with Mark Donnelly (the Vancouver Canucks anthem singer), and I performed during the second intermission for the North Delta Devils and Richmond Sockeyes game.

Furthermore, for all the basketball fans, I have been asked to sing the anthem for the quarter, semi and final games for the AAA High School Boys Basketball Provincials happening March 13-17 at the Langley Events Centre. This event started my anthem singing journey, and it will be the third year I am now singing for them!

I am expecting to be extremely busy with anthems during the up-coming hockey playoffs, and for the off-season, I am hoping to get back with the Vancouver Canadians baseball team and also a few teams in the Western Lacrosse Association!

Aside from singing, I have also decided to run for the title of Miss BC 2012 this year. This is a pageant that focuses on the inner-beauty of women, and my main reason for taking part is to raise money for Cops for Cancer.

A few years ago I made it my goal to try and donate money to different cancer organizations. In 2009, I organized a fun event at my high school where students voted (using money) on a teacher they wanted to see kiss a goat! In just a few days, I was able to donate over $500.00 to the BC Cancer Foundation.

Last year, my friend and I raised $1200.00 for the annual Child Run, in honour of my childhood friend Megan McNeil who passed away from her four-year battle with cancer in January 2011. This year, I am hoping to reach my goal of $5000.00.

The sports teams that I am currently singing for have agreed to try and help me fundraise in some way. My first fundraiser is actually taking place at the North Delta Devils game this Saturday at 6:45pm at Sungod Arena. A big thanks to the Devils for helping me out – I am definitely looking forward to it!

However, to secure my position in the competition, I am looking for sponsors. So, if anyone reading this article is part of an organization, or knows a business, that would be interested in assisting me throughout this journey, please let Island Sports News know so they can contact me!
