EVERETT, WA (ISN) – Less than one minute away from their second straight shutout loss, the Everett Silvertips tied the game late in regulation and then completed a 2-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks in overtime Sunday at Comcast Arena.
The victory snaps a six-game losing streak against Portland this season and also brings Everett back within one point of a playoff spot in the WHL’s Western Conference with ten regular season games remaining.
Staring at a 1-0 deficit and with the net empty in the final minute of regulation, Josh Winquist scored to tie the game at one. Ryan Harrison then notched the overtime winner on feed from Kohl Bauml to propel the Silvertips to victory. Kent Simpson was impressive again in goal, making 35 saves and holding the Winterhawks to a single goal for just the second time since October.
The first period ended scoreless as the Silvertips killed off two Portland powerplays to keep the visitors off the board despite an 11-4 shot advantage. The Winterhawks opened the scoring early in the second on a late-developing chance as Brad Ross whipped the puck from the right boards across to Cam Reid for a tap-in goal on the back door at 2:53. Shots in the middle frame were more even at 9-7 for the ‘Hawks, who carried that 1-0 lead into the third.
Everett killed off another Portland powerplay and began to push harder in the third period with 15 shots on net. After going seven full periods without a goal, the ‘Tips still trailed 1-0 before pulling Kent Simpson for an extra attacker in the final minutes. That’s when Ryan Murray fed a pass into the high slot for Josh Winquist, who ripped a slapshot past Mac Carruth and into the net with only 50 seconds remaining in regulation time.
It didn’t take long for the Silvertips to finish things off in overtime, the winning goal came just 1:07 into the extra session. Kohl Bauml picked up the puck in the corner on the play and slipped a pass to the low circle for Ryan Harrison, who took an open lane to the net and deked across the crease around Carruth before depositing the winning goal for a 2-1 final score.
Kent Simpson (15-28-1-5) totaled 35 saves in the win as the Silvertips also held the Winterhawks’ top-ranked powerplay unit scoreless on four opportunities. Everett had only 35 seconds of powerplay time in the contest, going 0 for 1 officially. Mac Carruth (38-13-2-0) stopped 26 shots in the overtime loss with the ‘Hawks outshooting the ‘Tips 36-28 for the night.
