South Rises at Island “AAA” High School Basketball Championships

It was a clean sweep Thursday for all four Victoria teams in quarter-final action at the Vancouver Island “AAA” Boys Basketball Championships being held at Cowichan Secondary School in Duncan.

It will be an all south semi-final match-up Friday night at the Vancouver Island “AAA” Boys basketball championships in Cowichan, as all four Victoria based teams won their quarter-final match-ups Thursday against north Island opponents.

In the first action of the day, the Claremont Spartans used a 19 point performance from Mason Loewen to defeat Dover Bay 58-51 in a tightly contested affair.  Dover Bay’s John Bethell had 24 points in the losing effort.

The Spartans will now advance to face powerful Oak Bay, who won their quarter-final match-up against Ballenas 76-64.  Leading the way for the Bays was Liam Horne with 21 points and Evan Woodson with 18.  The Whalers were led by Dustin Rodriguez who poured in an amazing 37 points in the losing cause.

In third game action of the day, Belmont used a 23-point third quarter to overcome a 27-20 halftime deficit to escape with a 60-56 win over Cowichan.  Jordan Fenn and Brock Holland had 18 and 16 points respectively to lead the Bulldogs, while Cowichan’s Willy Jeklin had 17 for the losers.

Finally, in the last action of the night, the Mount Doug Rams jumped out to a 23-14 first quarter lead and then outscored G.P. Vanier 18-6 in the final quarter to cruise to a 76-58 win in their quarter-final affair.  Elliot Rowe poured in 23 points for the Rams, while curtis Wilson and Gurpinder Kang scored 18 and 14 respectively.  Dillon Robson had 20 points for Vanier in the loss.

Belmont will now face Mount Doug in their semi-final match-up at 6:00 pm Friday, while the Oak Bay – Claremont game will follow at 8:00 pm.  The winners will advance to the Champioship final which is scheduled for 8:00 pm at Cowichan Secondary in Duncan.
