Victoria, BC (ISN) –
There is just over one week to go before nominations close for the 2012 Celebration of Women in Sport (WinS).

The 4th annual gala brunch – hosted by the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) on Sunday April 1 – honours women’s achievement in sport, and highlights the importance of sport for girls and women in all stages of athletic development. Three-time Paralympic Gold Medalist, Michelle Stilwell, and Lindsay Jennerich, National Team Athlete, Rowing Canada Aviron are guest speakers.

March 10 is the deadline with nominations being accepted in four categories – athlete, coach, sports builder, and volunteer. The athlete is one who has achieved an outstanding performance at the club, provincial, national or international level over the last calendar year. The coach is one who has had an outstanding performance at the club, provincial, national or international level. The sports builder has made a dedicated and measurable contribution to building sport in their community. The volunteer is one whose commitment and dedication has furthered the spirit of sport in their community. Nomination criteria and forms can be found on www.piseworld.com.

“We have some outstanding role models in sport and they often go unrecognized, so this event is important to recognize the achievements of women at all levels of sport,” says Andrea Carey, Director of Operations and Community Engagement at PISE. “We encourage individuals and sport groups to submit their nominations, and to attend the event to show their support for women in the sports community.”

Individuals and businesses can purchase tables for the gala, and event sponsorship is also available. Each year the event attracts 300 attendees, so this is a unique opportunity for companies and individuals to be seen to support amateur sport, and to play a part in the future success of all female athletes. The gala is attended by sport academies, local sport organizations, National team members, Island Olympians and Paralympians, and sports advocates from British Columbia.
