Cranbrook, BC – Brock Montgomery scored the game winning goal at 2:22 of the third period on a two-on-one rush lifting the Kootenay Ice to a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Hitmen Saturday night at the Cranbrook Rec-Plex.
After a scoreless first period, Calgary opened the scoring early in the second when Cody Sylvester potted his 23rd goal of the season on a partial break off the left wing.
The Ice pulled even just past the midway mark of the frame as Sam Reinhart converted on a rebound chance for his 27th goal of his rookie campaign.
Chris Driedger made 23 saves in the Hitmen net and took the loss while Nathan Lieuwen stopped 22 for the Ice who improve to 5-1 against Calgary in the season series.
The Hitmen are now 39-24-2-1. At 81 points they remain fourth in the WHL’s Eastern Conference three points up on the fifth place Ice who have a game in hand.
Calgary returns to action Tuesday night in Red Deer against the Rebels.
Next Hitmen home game is Sunday, March 11th when Calgary hosts Red Deer at 4:00 p.m.
