Victoria, BC (ISN) – After securing the fourth seed in the 2012 BCIHL Championships last weekend with a win over the TWU Spartans, the UVic Hockey Club will host the Spartans Saturday in what will be the final home stand of the 2011-2012 season.
The two teams clash at Ian Stewart Complex Arena for a Saturday 8:00PM puck drop while Sunday’s start is scheduled for 1:00PM.
It’s been an up-and-down season for UVic that has seen everything from an early season loss at the hands of BCIHL-worst Selkirk College to a dramatic, record-setting four goal comeback against Thompson Rivers. Boasting a record of 9-11-2, this weekend will provide the young UVic side an opportunity to refine their game before this year’s provincial championship which is slated for March 14-18 inKamloops,BC.
As for the youth of UVic, this season has seen the emergence of two particular BCIHL rookies in Adam Klein and Eli Wiebe. Wiebe, a native of Tsawwassen, has impressed this year with 17 points (6G-11A) over 21 games. Klein has the distinction of leading UVic in rookie scoring through 22 games with 19 points (8G-11A) despite being held pointless in three consecutive games in November.
It should come as no surprise that Matt Bell and Brent Sutherland currently lead the team with 22 points a piece. Bell, last year’s BCIHL MVP, has an impressive 22 points (8G-22A) in just 14 games after the star center missed 8 games with a concussion earlier this season.
This weekend’s games will also mark the home-ice swan song for some UVic players. Veterans Adam Courtnall, Brent Sutherland, Matt Maycock, and Francis Gonella will all be likely lost to graduation. BCIHL star Matt Bell’s return is also in question.
The UVIC Hockey Club, a Vikes Sport Clubs program, is a student-led organization that competes competitively in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League. Information on the team is available at www.uvichockey.com while league details can be found at www.bcihl.ca.
