EDMONTON (ISN) – The No.1 seeded Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks put in a dominant performance to take a 3-0 win over the fourth-seeded UPEI Panthers in Pool ‘A’ action on Day 2 of the Women’s CIS Hockey Championships, Friday afternoon at Clare Drake Arena.

Sophomore Laura Brooker tallied the game-winning goal while Katherine Shirriff and Jessie Hurrell each scored their second goal of the tournament. Netminder Erika Thunder made 12 saves for the shutout.
Third-year puckstopper Kristy Dobson made 31 saves in the loss, earning Player of the Game honours for the Panthers.
Laurier now sits in second place in Pool ‘A’, but in a difficult position to advance to the gold medal final. The Golden Hawks will need a UPEI win by at least two goals tomorrow over Montreal, but no more than five to advance, while the Panthers would need to win by six, or more to move on based on the tournament tie-breaker of goals for and against. Montreal can keep the formula simple with a win punching their ticket to the championship game atop Pool ‘A’.
The Golden Hawks got on the board early in the first when, off a faceoff win by Caitlin Muirhead, Brooker waltzed into the slot and wristed a shot glove-side at the 4:28 mark.
Laurier almost made it a two-goal lead three minutes later but Dobson’s quick right pad stymied the efforts of both Haley Baxter and Danelle Im. The UPEI goaltender also got some help from the iron in the first, with Devon Skeats ringing a shot off the post on a partial breakaway, as the Hawks entered the first intermission only up by one despite outshooting their opposition 11-4.
Laurier would continue the offensive pressure in the second, however, and with 7:09 left in the middle frame, Shirriff’s deflection of a Blair Connelly point shot put the top-ranked Golden Hawks up by two.
Hurrell would round out the scoring in the third, taking advantage of a UPEI turnover in their own end by skating into the slot and firing it low to the blocker side of Dobson.
The final game of round robin play for Pool A takes place Saturday afternoon at 3:30 PM, the UPEI Panthers will take on the Carabins de Montréal.
