Victoria, BC (ISN) – A late goal from Justin Ferreira lifted the University of Victoria Vikes Hockey Club to a 7-6 win over Trinity Western University Saturday at the Ian Stewart Complex in Victoria.
The University of Victoria Hockey Club and the Trinity Western University Spartans met Saturday night at Ian Stewart Complex Arena. UVic sent rookie goaltender Robert McLachlan between the pipes while TWU countered with Tim Zwiers.
Despite heavily out shooting the Spartans early in the first and controlling the play, UVic found themselves struggling to find the back of the net to start the game. The tightly contested period continued until Matt Bell found a loose puck in a goal mouth scramble and slotted it behind Zwiers with just 25 seconds remaining in the period. After one, UVIC 1 TWU 0.
The second period would prove to be a much more eventful twenty minutes. UVic would extend their lead to two at the 1:15 mark when rookie Eli Wiebe entered the zone and wired a snap shot top corner past the outstretched glove of the TWU goaltender. The Spartans would then find a pair of goals, one of which on the power play, to even up the game by the 12:57 mark. Seven short seconds later, Mark Prest would bury his fourth of the campaign to regain the lead for UVic. Just over one minute later, Brent Sutherland would fire one home to once again give UVic a two goal lead. An embattled UVic side couldn’t maintain the lead as the Spartans scored two more goals within nine seconds of each other before the period drew to a close. After forty minutes, UVIC 4 TWU 4.
The third period saw the back-and-forth battle continue between the two sides. Once again, UVic scored early as Mark Prest potted his second of the night just 1:10 into the final frame. After a responding goal from TWU that saw Jason Margolus take the reigns in the UVic net, rookie Brett Orser would rifle a wrist shot glove side on the power play to give UVic a slim 6-5 advantage with 5:08 to play. The Spartans just would not go away Saturday night and tied the game once again with 3:09 remaining. As time wound down, Justin Ferreira corralled a loose puck in the slot and squeaked it through a sprawling Tim Zwiers with just 16 seconds remaining in the game to grant an exhausted UVic team the victory. Final score, UVIC 7 TWU 6.
Both Mark Prest and Eli Wiebe turned in three point performances for UVic while Brandon Long and Josh Gordon also turned in three point nights for the visitors.
UVic went 1/2=50.0% on the power play while Trinity Western was also 1/2=50.0%. UVic out-shot the Spartans by a margin of 38-23.
UVic and Trinity Western will clash again Sunday afternoon at the Ian Stewart Complex Arena in the Club’s final home game of the season. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
