Nanaimo, BC (ISN) – The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Women’s Volleyball team are CCAA National Champions after defeating Mount Royal University 3 games to 1 in the Championship final Saturday evening in Nanaimo.
As host of the Nationals, the Mariners had home court advantage for the tournament, but failed to capitalize on this early on against Mount Royal, as they dropped the first game 25-23.
After that however it was all Mariners, as they stormed back to win the final three games by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 26-24.
Leading the way for the Mariners was Leanna Gildersleeve who was named the MVP of the match for her effort which included 23 kills, 2 assists and 13 digs. The Mariners Dani Smith also had a strong game earning 41 of the Mariners 49 assists.
Smith, along with teammate Shenise Power, were named to the First Team All-Stars for the tournament, while Tamara Rosenlund was named to the Second Team All-Stars.
