Saanich, BC (ISN) – The puck drops at Pearkes Arena on March 18 as the Saanich Braves Midget Tier 2 Hockey team hosts the BC Provincial Midget Tier 2 Hockey Championships.
The Championships run through March 21 with the Opening Ceremonies set to take place at Saanich’s Pearkes Arena at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday March 18.
Some of the best 15-18 year old hockey players from across British Columbia will step on the ice at the Championships. The Braves will be joined by the Aldergrove Bruins, the Cranbrook Ice, the Langley Eagles, the Penticton Vees, the Powell River Kings, the Prince George Cougars and the Rossland-Trail Smoke Eaters.
The Saanich Braves Midget squad is coached by veteran local minor hockey coach Rob Maguire currently in his 19th season of coaching. Maguire will be assisted on the bench by Dick Crowder, Adam Black and Thomas Service. Off-ice the team is led by Manager Rod Bushby who has had double duty this season as Chair of the Provincials organizing committee.
On the ice the Braves are led by Captain Seamus Maguire and Alternate Captains Tyler Broughton, Jack Rachwalski and Kyle Livelton. The Braves top goal scorer is first-year player Nick Guerra. 6’4” power forward Cam MacKay provides a strong physical presence up front.
“This is a great opportunity to play against some of the best players in British Columbia,” said Seamus Maguire. “My teammates and I have been preparing for this since the season began in September and we feel that we are strong contenders for the championship.”
The Saanich Braves have received tremendous support from the local business community who have provided key financial sponsorship of the tournament. All games are free to attend and the public is encouraged to come out and support their hometown team.
All players will be in attendance at the Opening Banquet to be held at the Harbour Towers Hotel on Saturday March 17 at 6:30 p.m. Veteran local sportswriter Cleve Dheenshaw will be guest speaker.
