(ISN) – Alex Petrovic scored a pair of goals as the visiting Red Deer Rebels doubled up the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-2 on Tuesday night.
The Tigers and Rebels faced off in their final meeting of the season. The two teams entered the game in very different situations. The Tigers had clinched a playoff spot and had secured home ice advantage for the first round. The Rebels sat in ninth place having already been eliminated from playoff contention. Having nothing to lose the Rebels played hard and reveled in their role of spoiler. The Rebels defeated the Tigers 4-2 and took away a very valuable two points from the home team.
James Bettauer and Cole Grbavac were the goal scorers for the Tigers. Bettauer’s goal came with only a second remaining in he second period. He onetimed a Rebels’ clearing attempt past Deven Dubyk for his 21st of the season. The goal tied the game at 1-1 entering the second period. Grbavac scored his 13th goal of the season just past the midway point of the third. After a scramble in front of the net, Alex Theriau took a shot from the point which created the rebound chance for Grbavac. Scott McKay also picked up an assist on the goal.
Alex Petrovic had a great game for the Rebels. He scored their first two goals to give him 12 on the season. The first goal came at 8:36 of the first and was assisted by Brooks Maxwell. His second came less than a minute into the third while on the power play. It restored the Rebels one goal lead and was assisted by Charles Inglis and Matthew Dumba. Tyson Ness added to the Rebels lead at the exact mid point of the third with his 20th goal. Maxwell picked up his second assist of the night and Cody Thiel was credited with the other. After Cole Grbavac cut the Rebels’ lead back to one goal the Tigers decided to pull Tyler Bunz for the extra attacker. Adam Kambeitz seized the opportunity to score his 17th of the season into the empty net and ice the game for the Rebels. John Persson and Stephen Hak were credited with the assists on the empty netter.
Tyler Bunz played solid in net for the Tigers saving 31 of 34 shots for only his 20th loss in 59 games. Former Tiger Deven Dubyk won his 15th game for the Rebels this season allowing only two goals on 30 shots.
The Tigers’ special teams had a rough night going 0 for 4 on the power play and 1 for 2 on the penalty kill.
