OTTAWA (March 13, 2012) – Swimming Canada, the governing body for competitive swimming, applauds the announcement made today by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport) for additional enhanced excellence funding provided to 11 summer sports in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“We applaud the Government of Canada’s support aimed at our Canadian athletes and belief in creating a culture that strives towards podium performances at the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach for Swimming Canada.
The Government of Canada is providing an additional contribution of close to $2.3 million to 11 summer national sport organizations through Sport Canada’s Sport Support Program. The 11 sports receiving additional targeted funding have been identified as having medal potential by Own the Podium. The sports receiving funding are athletics, boccia, canoe, cycling, diving, equine, goalball, soccer, swimming, wheelchair rugby, and wrestling.
