Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Comox Valley RV Half Marathon took place Sunday in Courtenay, BC. It was hosted by the Comox Valley Road Runners. It was the sixth race of the Frontrunners Island Race Series and had 431 finishers.
Jim Finlayson (Apex Runners) won a convincing race in 1:07:29, four minutes ahead of Bruce Deacon (Prairie Inn Harriers) who finished in 1:11:22. Third was Stephen Struthers (Bastion Running Club) in 1:13:53. Finlayson was also the top Master setting a new Masters course record. Melissa Ross (Oceanside Running Club) won the women’s race in 1:20:25, closely followed by Care Nelson (Frontrunners Athletic Club) in 1:20:58. Third was Sonja Futehally (Mercury Rising Triathlon) in 1:27:30. The top women’s master was Nancy Baxendale in 1:27:41.
Race Director Brad Crowe – who ran the race and came in 14th place – praised the volunteers and race crew for a smooth running race. “The weather conditions were perfect which resulted in some fast times out there. The volunteers make this happen, providing a safe course and great hot food afterwards.”
The Frontrunners Green Jersey for the fastest male sprinter over the last 100-metres was won by Byron Trajan in the open category (12:95) and Darren Katila in the masters category (14:19). Melissa Ross won the female open in 18:71 and Kimberley Dray the masters in 19:13.
The Prairie Inn Harriers, Victoria lead the club standings with 3,520 points, followed by Comox Valley Road Runners with 1,910 and Frontrunners Athletic Club with 1,607. Full gun time results are on http://racedaytiming.ca/series?pg=raceresult&race=293
Eight races make up the Frontrunners Island Race Series. Comox Valley RV Half Marathon will be followed by Merville 15K on April 1, and Sooke River 10K on April 15. Comox Valley RV Half Marathon was also part of the Timex BC Series. All races are sanctioned by BC Athletics.
