Victoria, BC (ISN) – The seventh race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – Merville 15K – took place yesterday, April 1. The race – which was hosted by the River Runners Run Club – had 283 finishers.
In the men’s race 26 seconds separated the top three – with Ben Brzezynski (Aspire Running) winning in 50:18. Second was Sean Chester (Aspire Running) in 50:31, and third was Mark Cryderman (River Runners) in 50:44. Vince Brotherston from the Comox Valley Road Runners won the masters men’s race in 54:12.
Care Nelson (Frontrunners Athletic Club) won the women’s race in 58:09, second was Julie Van Veelan (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 1:00:32 and third was Valerie Bell (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 1:03:57. Valerie was also the top masters woman.
“Merville was blessed with fabulous racing weather – sunny and cool,” said Linda Nagle, Race Director. “We had Easter pace bunnies to keep everyone on pace which resulted in some fast times. It was a very successful event.”
The Frontrunners Green Jersey for the fastest male sprinter over the last 100-metres was won by Chris Callendar in the open category (11:16) and Darren Katila in the masters category (12:45). Jennifer Mickelson won the female open in 14:33 and Kimberley Dray the masters in 15:86.
The Prairie Inn Harriers, Victoria lead the club standings with 3,789 points, followed by Comox Valley Road Runners with 2,351 and Frontrunners Athletic Club with 1,817. Full gun time results are on http://racedaytiming.ca/series?pg=raceresult&race=294.
Eight races make up the Frontrunners Island Race Series. Merville 15K will be followed by the last race in the series – Sooke River 10K on April 15. All races are sanctioned by BC Athletics.
