ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – Melissa Robinson, Women’s Rugby

Though the team may not have reached their desired outcome, the captain lead the Vikes women through a rocky season with a determined will and an unbreakable positive attitude. Robinson’s endless energy and enthusiasm has helped her push her team to train harder and strive for positive results in the BC Adidas Premiership League this spring. Robinson was honoured as the BC Rugby News MVP of the week after the Vikes took on Simon Fraser University on March 17th. Outside of competition, Robinson lead her squad in participation with Operation Christmas Child as well as being involved with many other volunteer opportunities and charities. Born and raised in North Vancouver, this tight five player has a long history of rugby that is sure to continue well into the future. Look for Robinson wearing the No. 2 jersey in the Vikes’ upcoming clash of the titans match against Velox, Apr. 14.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – Matthew Sarmento, Men’s Field Hockey

Vikes men’s field hockey player Matthew Sarmento has had a busy and competitive season with both the UVic team and the Canadian junior national squad. In March, Sarmento helped the Vikes earn a tie and a win in the final two games of the season and he was second on the team in goal scoring throughout the year, with five goals. With Canada, Sarmento and his Under-21 team had an 8-1 record while touring in Santiago, Chile. Part of the nine games played included a three-nations tournament, where Canada went 3-1, with Sarmento contributing three of Canada’s goals. Sarmento scored crucial goals including the game-winner against rivals Argentina, where the Canadians won 4-3. The Canadian side finished first in the tournament, winning on goal differential.

The men’s golf team competed in three NAIA golf tournaments in March, including the Point Loma Invitational, the Cavalier Classic and the Battle at Primm. The Vikes finished third overall at the Point Loma Invitational, led by Darren Hupfer who finished sixth at 4-over-par. The Vikes won the Cavalier Classic by a 47-stroke margin, which included a 12-under-par third round for the team. The Vikes men finished the tournament at 7-under-par. Carson Kallis, Hupfer and Dylan Cann finished in first, second and third respectively. The final tournament of the month, the Battle at Primm featured many of the best NAIA teams in the nation. The Vikes finished seventh, led by a top 10 finish by Hupfer who’s third round of 3-under-par (69) was the low round of the day. The team looks to continue climbing the ranking when they compete in the Regional Championship in Prescott, Arizona.
