Victoria, BC (ISN) – Andrea Carey, Director of Operations & Community Engagement at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) has been appointed Chair of SportHost Victoria, the first woman to hold this position.
SportHost Victoria is a sport tourism partnership made up of key sport and tourism industry leaders in the Greater Victoria region.
Carey brings a wealth of experience to the role. She has been Director of Operations at PISE since its opening in September 2008 and she is very active in the sports community – as a Director at Large for the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Co-Chair for Promotion Plus Victoria. She was recently named as “One to Watch” on the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport’s annual list of Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity.
“I am honoured to take on the role of, and be the first female Chair with SportHost Victoria. I strongly believe in the power of sport tourism, especially with Victoria’s rich history of hosting international sporting events,” says Carey. “But I believe there is a lot more work to do to build partnerships between the multiple municipalities to harness the energy and capacity to ensure that Victoria remains a destination of choice for sporting events.”
SportHost, under Executive Director Hugh MacDonald, was created as a legacy of the 1994 Commonwealth Games with the objective of increasing the number of high-profile sporting events held in Greater Victoria, and to position the region in the national and international sport tourism market as an optimal environment for hosting first class events.
“Sport tourism is the only growing segment of tourism, and a reliable source of economic impact to our community. With the leadership of Hugh MacDonald, we have established our sporting destination – now we need to build capacity and grow that potential as we move forward,” adds Carey.
The services provided by SportHost Victoria assist event organizers with access to facilities, funding, accommodations, marketing, sponsorship, media relations and bid support.
