(ISN) – The Nanaimo Junior A Timbermen opened the Exhibition season with a hard fought 9 – 8 win over arch rival Victoria Shamrocks Wednesday night in Fuller Lake.
The Jr T Men never trailed in the game taking a 2 -1 lead into the first intermission on goals by Corey Shires and Ryan Hanna.
Pete Dubenski played the first half and was stellar in the first period kicking out 11 shots.
The game opened up in the second period with both teams netting 5 goals in a see saw battle that saw the T Men head into the 2nd Intermission with a 7 – 6 lead. Corey Shires scored his second goal of the game with Andrew Miller, Ryan Nicks, Luke Anderson and Mitch Parker potting singles.
Dubenski gave way to Cory Mayzes at the half way point of the second period.
Nanaimo took a 9 -7 lead on the eventual game winner scored by veteran Paul Brebber. Victoria came within one goal scoring with 59 seconds left on the clock but could not get the equalizer.
Leading the way for Victoria was Devon Casey with 3 goals, Brody Eastwood with 4 assists and Adam Brown with 2 and 2. Also scoring were Dane Schoor, Kurtis Green, and Chris Wardle.
The Jr T Men open their season at home Saturday April 28 vs the Coquitlam Jr Adanacs – 5 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Tickets are on sale at the T Men office on Boxwood Road.
The Shamrocks first league game is Saturday the 28th at 500 Bear Mountain arena when the Delta Islanders come to town.
