BC Rugby Weekend Schedule: April 21-22, 2012
With playoffs just around the corner, BC Rugby leagues are currently in full swing with 44 games scheduled for this weekend. This Sunday will also feature the Year End BC Rugby True Blue Mini Jamboree and at the high school level 16 teams will contest for the annual BCSSRU provincial sevens title. Playoffs are already underway for the Third Division as the NVIRU final sees Cowichan away to Velox on Sunday afternoon. In the Tier Two Okanagan Spring Brewery Leagues, Bayside and Rowers are currently jockeying for first place in the standings with the league winner earning promotion to the 2012-2013 Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League. No room for error as Meraloma host James Bay in must win matchup
Two rounds remain in the Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League season and week 13 promises a number of barnburners as teams jockey for playoff positioning. Table leaders James Bay Athletic Association (11-1) are on the road to Meraloma (6-5-1), a team desperately needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive. Over on Vancouver Island, the Oak Bay Castaway Wanderers (8-3-1) are at home to Capilano (9-3) of West Vancouver as the two teams continue to jockey for home field advantage in the playoffs.
2012 BCSSRU Sevens set for this weekend at St. George’s
The 2012 BCSSRU (Boy’s High School) Sevens provincial championship kicks off this Saturday, April 21st at St. George’s School in Vancouver. Day one kicks off at 12pm and will feature 24 games of pool play with the teams then seeded for the playoff rounds on day two. Sunday, April 22nd will feature the playoff rounds with teams contesting for Shield, Bowl, Plate and Cup championships. Day two kicks off at 9:30am and wraps up with the Cup final at 2:15.
BC representatives headed to Uganda with Gainline Africa
Today, Gainline Africa is a completely volunteer-driven organization made up of rugby and non-rugby players who believe that their work can make a powerful difference. Three individuals from the BCRU, Kat Cureton (Meralomas), Brendan Starling (UBCOB/referee) and Conan Cooper (Meralomas), will be travelling to Gulu, in the north of Uganda, this June to take part in the 2-week coaching tour. Kat, Brendan and Conan will have the opportunity to work with a local club team, and several boys and girls high school teams. They will share their knowledge and experience of the game and the positive benefits of participating in team sports. The 2-week tour ends with a friendly tournament between the schools.
Abbotsford Collegiate wins 2012 BC Rugby High School Girls Provincial Sevens
Abbotsford Collegiate went undefeated to win the 2012 BC Rugby High School Girls Provincial Sevens championship on Saturday afternoon at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium. Abbotsford Collegiate played six games during the two-day tournament conceding just one try and racked up a total of 218 points in offence. The tournament champs went 3-0 in pool play defeating Lord Byng 45-5, Kwantlen Park 44-0 and Semiahmoo 30-0. Carrying their form into day two, Abbotsford downed Lord Tweedsmuir 32-0 in the Cup quarterfinal and defeated GP Vanier 30-0 in the Cup semifinals.
