VICTORIA, B.C. – At the 2012 BC Basketball Hall of Fame and Awards Dinner, on Apr. 21, at the Langley Events Centre, fifth-year guard Ryan MacKinnon (Comox, B.C.) was named British Columbia’s university male athlete of the year.

MacKinnon was nominated along with University of Fraser Valley Cascades’ Joel Friesen and UBC Thunderbirds’ Nathan Yu.

The nod from Basketball BC brings to end a prolific career for the five-year UVic veteran who led the Canada West in three-pointers and was honoured this past season as a Canada West first-team all-star and CIS second-team All-Canadian.

MacKinnon is now turning his attention off the court, focusing on an initiative started by him and his three brothers known as “Biking for Baha.” The youngest of the four, Ryan is now training to ride across Canada this May to raise money for Parkinson’s disease research in honour of his grandfather, who battled the disease for nearly 16 years.
