Victoria (ISN) – Westshore Rebels Spring Camp began to heat up Saturday at Bear Mountain Stadium as Rebel veterans and hopefuls went into day two trying to prove they belong.
With day one jitters behind them, players took to the field knowing that they only had 2 more days to impress coaches and win one of a few positions available this year on the team.
With helmets popping, and ice packs aplenty, 80-90 recruits appeared aware of how invaluable their time on the field would be. “We don’t have too many holes to fill this year, but the holes needed filling are big ones”, said Roger Wade, president of the Westshore Rebels team.
The team, entertaining 4 QB’s this camp, on the heels of last year’s star QB Cat Todorovich. are looking for additional spark on offense to compliment running back Greg Morris. When asked for a prediction on he upcoming season, Roger Wade would only comment, “It should be a good season for us”.
The Rebels boast 7 returning players that have raised some eyebrows in the BC Lions evaluation camp. Players Greg Morris, Rob Smith, Kyle Daechsel, Sam Narkaj, Quin Van Gylswick, Niles Geogan and Colton Farago will head to the Lions evaluation camp Sunday and Monday and be put through their paces with select university players. Morris, Daeschel, Van Gylswick and Farago were all 2011 BCFC award winners last year, helping the Rebels get to the BCFC semi-finals against the Vancouver Island Raiders.
Spring Camp will conclude Sunday with a team scrimmage at Bear Mountain Stadium at 11:00 am. The Rebels first home game will be against the Vancouver Island Raiders 7:00pm August 4th at Bear Mountain Stadium.
