Victoria (ISN) – Both Prospect Lake and Castaways FC went down to defeat Sunday in their respective semi-final matchups, putting an end to their LIWSA seasons.
Senior Women’s A-Cup Semi Final
Columbus FC continued their winning form in Provincial Senior Women’s A-Cup competition with a gritty 1:0 semi-final victory versus Prospect Lake FC of Saanich. The lone goal coming from the foot of team leader, Alexis Heinz on a penalty kick early in the second half. The result propels Columbus FC into the provincial Senior Women’s A-Cup final on May 12th at the Burnaby Lake Sport Complex West.
Alexis Heinz of Columbus FC expertly shields and gains control of the ball versus the high pressure defending of Prospect Lake’s Taylor Hackett in the opening half of the Provincial Women’s A-Cup semi-final held in Saanich, BC’s, Layritz Park.
Columbus FC were the early perpetrators of possession and forced play in the Prospect Lake half on the first quarter hour. The hosts from Saanich battled to sustain the pressure to the best of their ability. The play then balanced itself throughout the next twenty minutes as the midfielders were featured in a see-saw tussle. The final ten minutes of the half favoured Prospect Lake as they created gaps behind the Columbus defenders and nearly scored a goal at the forty-five minute mark forcing the Columbus FC keeper to make a collapsing save.
Early in the second half, a Columbus attacker away from the ball was hauled down in the penalty area by a Prospect Lake midfielder. A confident Alexis Heinz potted the penalty low and to her right beating the Prospect Lake keeper who dove to her left correctly. Prospect Lake would have none of the attack from Columbus at that point and ramped up their pace and aggression a notch.
At approximately the 75th minute, a heavy tackle by a Columbus FC midfielder changed the landscape of the game. The offending player earned a yellow card from the game official, as did the retaliating player from Prospect Lake FC. The Prospect Lake player also drew a second cautionary offense from the official and was ejected for the remainder of the match.
While Prospect Lake valiantly forced the attack into the Columbus FC side of the field, they could not muster a quality scoring chance and fell to the visitors on the day.
Columbus FC will play the winner of Surrey United/North Shore Renegades match played earlier on the day in the Provincial Senior Women’s A-Cup final, May 12th. The winner of the final advances to the National Championships scheduled October 2-8 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Senior Women’s B-Cup Semi Final
Aldergrove Adrenaline continued their dream journey through Provincial B Cup competition with a well deserved 2:0 victory versus Castaways FC of Victoria. The win see’s the ladies in green to the Provincial B Cup final scheduled May 12th at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. They face the winner of today’s other semi-final game between North Shore Girls Impact/North Coquitlam Elite.
Both teams were evenly matched in all areas of the pitch with the game testing the mettle of each individual on every touch. Aldergrove would net their ticket to the final on what proved to be the game winning goal in the opening half. The ladies earned three success corners on the left side and you know what they say…. ‘the third time is the charm’, and they made no mistake as Kirby Parsons leaped in the air higher than all other players and turned her header into a goal.
Castaways FC’s Angie Mallhi wins this ‘eyes wide closed’ air battle vs. Aldergrove Adrenaline defenders V. Livingstone and A. Burt.
The second half saw the speed of Aldergove’s Dianna Walker be the difference as she pushed the Castaways defenders deep into their own end often. A deep run and ensuing cross by Walker was deflected away by the Castaways keeper to the foot of onrushing striker, Carly Strongston. She buried the gimme into the back netting for the 2:0 lead as the clock hit just past the hour mark.
Castaways FC made their trademark out of second half comebacks all season and were valiant in their effort to make a game of it. Midfielder Julia Ratcliffe stabbed a toe into the ball from 35 yards out just two minutes after the Aldergrove goal, catching their keeper off her line. Ratcliffe’s directed shot rattled off the cross bar. Minutes later, striker Joey Porco found herself clear at the top of the penalty area. Her rushed shot was expertly saved by the Adrenaline keeper and any other ensuing effort by Castaways would not reach the red zone of the danger meter from that point onward.
The game settled on the 2:0 result with both teams walking off the field exhausted for their effort.
