The Victoria Jr. Mariners split their home and home 4 game series with the White Rock Jr. Tritons over the weekend. The Mariners lost both games in White Rock on Saturday by scores of 7-5 and 8-0 but rallied back home at Henderson Park on Sunday winning 4-3 and 3-2.

The Jr. M’s started Dallas Patterson on the mound in Sunday’s opening game while White Rock countered with Ryoma Murata.

The Jr. Mariners got on the board first when Lucas Piechnik scored on a sacrifice grounder then Zach Downey crossed the plate on a Brandon Ashford single to stake a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

White Rock would answer back quickly with Griffin Hebert on a fielder’s choice and Taylor Bedwell tied the game at 2-2 when Patterson was called for a balk.

In the 6th inning the Jr. Mariners brought Jacob Barnard in to relieve Patterson with runners on the corners. Barnard managed to get the first batter he faced to ground out but a pair of walks to the next two he faced brought in the go ahead run for the Jr. Tritons.

Heading into the 7th inning trailing by a run, Barnard pitched a strong inning and held the Jr. Tritons off the board.

A Tanner Hess single loaded the bases for the Jr. Mariners but confusion on the signal by pinch base runner Michael Varley lead to him getting caught trying to steal home.

Barnard earned the win for the Jr. Mariners while White Rocks Jake Gill took the loss.

Game 2 saw the Jr. Mariners take an early lead in the 1st inning when an Ashford single scored Varley. The Mariners would add to their lead in the second off a Chris Fougner double that scored Mitch Bryan and Quinn Shelby to stake a 3-0 lead.

White Rock cut into the lead in the 3rd when a passed ball with the bases loaded allowed Murata to score.

It turned into a bit of pitchers duel with neither team able to put anything together until the seventh inning, when Kieren Oconner was able to score for the Jr. Tritons with two out to cut the lead to 3-2.

Tanner Hess, in for Tyler de Man, got the next Jr. Triton batter to ground out to preserve the win and split of the 4 game series.
