3rds: Velox 17 – Capilano 3
– report from John Lyall
Velox opened their BC playoffs quarterfinals at home Saturday in a repeat of last year’s semi-final against the Caps. Last year’s game was a barnburner with Velox jumping out to a big lead, only to hold out a late Caps surge. The history between the two clubs is vast, and includes the 9 OT game a number of years back in the BC premier playoffs (where a number of players from both sides played in), and numerous monster clashes up in Williams Lake. It must be said that we knew we would be in tough against the Caps.
The day started with the Caps already warming up with Velox players trickling in. Not a great start to the day, one ably noticed by Coach Vath. The opening twenty were played at a solid pace, Caps controlling possession and territory, yet unable to crack a solid defensive wall. In one of the infrequent forays into the Caps half, Kev Summerfeldt slotted a penalty a 3 – 0 lead. The hard hits were evident, both Conrad and Letawske requiring a cut man, while the Caps went down two players in the opening stanza.
Velox got their legs and asserted them in the second twenty minute stanza. However, a not straight lineout at the Caps 5 m line appeared to give the Caps a get out of jail card. However, a huge defensive scrum saw a tighthead to Velox which allowed Captain Allen Hall to crash over for the opening try, converted by Summerfeldt for a 10 – 0 halftime score.
The second half was much like the first, Velox playing defense for great portions, Caps uncharacteristically dropping a few balls. Caps closed the gap with a penalty and a 10 – 3 score. Velox secured the win when a dropped ball landed in Conrad Newell’s hands for a 40 m counter attack score, again converted by Summerfeldt for a 17 – 3 final.
It was a gutsy defensive effort by the hometeam. Full credit to the Caps for a great game. The boys ended the night with a court session that was well attended and by all accounts a good time. Next up, the Thirds face the Brit Lions Saturday at 1:00, the winner making the BC finals. Come down and support the Thirds and women in Semi-Final Day next Saturday.
This weekend, the club hosts a pair of provincial semifinal matches on Saturday, with the women taking on Bayside at 11:30am, and the 3rds playing the Brit-Lions at 1pm.
On Thursday, the club is having Valkyries night, starting at 8pm: all current players, alumni, supporters and potential players are invited out for a potluck dinner and chance to socialize with the ladies before their big match on Saturday. The girls are running a reverse 50-50 draw this week, with tickets sales starting Thursday and the draw on Saturday.
The banquet is coming up quickly, May 12. Tickets are available at the bar for $35 per person. Get them soon so we can inform the caterer!
