The Velox Valkyries were minutes from hoisting the Harris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the British Columbia Premier Women’s rugby Champions only to have Burnaby Lake snatch it from their hands in the dying seconds of the game.

That was last year and to say it left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Valkyries would be an understatement.

The ladies came into the 2012 season with one goal in mind to get back to the Championship game and walk off the field with the trophy held high.

Under the guidance of head coach Aaron Frisby, the Valkyries have put together a season to remember. After going 9-0 in the Fall Vancouver Island Rugby Union season the ladies looked forward to the Adidas Premiership Spring Provincial season.

They knew the competition would be stiffer, they knew they couldn’t take a day off, they knew this year had the potential to be something special.

They were without the services of Barbara Mervin, Jessica Dovanne, Julianne Zussman and Lyndzi Anderson for most of the season due to Team Canada commitments. They had several players suffer injuries that sidelined them for weeks at a time.

But none of this mattered, they dug into their incredible pool of talent and kept putting up victories.

It was late March when they would meet up with the reigning Champions, both team were undefeated and this was being touted as the game of the season.

Velox came out hard and fast and posted a 26-8 victory and proved there were no demons lurking from last season.

They finished the Spring season two weeks ago, a perfect 9-0, pretty heady stuff but it’s not good enough for these ladies, they came into the season with one goal in mind and they won’t be satisfied until they complete that task.

They begin that task this weekend when they host the Bayside Sharks RFC in the Adidas Premiership Semi-final. They downed the Sharks 46-0 earlier this season but no one is taking this game for granted, it’s the playoffs and stranger things have happened.

Coach Frisby has his team prepared, Captain Sarah Levson has her team prepared and the veterans on the squad have their team prepared.

If you are interested in watching something special head on down to Velox field at 11:00 am Saturday morning and cheer on your hometown Valkyries as they continue on their quest for greatness.
