VICTORIA, B.C. (ISN) – The University of Victoria will host the 40th annual Vikes Relays track meet in conjunction with the Victoria International Track Classic (VITC) from June 12-13.

In 2011, over 400 aspiring track athletes participated in the Vikes Relays, which will again feature three youth events – a sprint, distance run and 4×100-m relay. Each athlete entered into the Vikes relays will also receive a free ticket to attend the Victoria International Track Classic on June 13.

Registration for the Vikes Relays event is at no cost, will include a t-shirt for the first 100 who register, as well as four free training sessions with the UVic Vikes track athletes and coaches. Training sessions will occur on May 16, 23, 29 and June 6, from 6-7 p.m. at Centennial Stadium. Parents are encouraged to register their children, regardless of their school affiliation.

“Dairyland believes that track fosters not only physical activity, but also team spirit, respect of others, leadership and determination,” said Doug Noel, Key Account Manager of Dairyland, a proud partner of the event.

Thanks to the support of Thrifty Foods, Hot House Pizza and Dairyland, all young athletes in grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to experience competitive running in a fun environment at no cost.

“Thrifty Foods is proud to support healthy activities for youth,” said Vivian Chenard, Thrifty Foods manager of sponsorships and events. “This is one of the many ways we are engaged in building stronger and healthier communities.”

Selected Vikes Relays finalists will have the opportunity to race their finals in between events at the VITC, the following day. The VITC will provide Canadian athletes one of their final opportunities to face world-class competition prior to the Olympic Trials, June 27.

Tickets for the VITC are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $5 for youth (under 14) or $30 for a family pass for two adults and two youth. Parents of Vikes Relays participants can purchase tickets for the VITC in person on June 12 for a discounted price of $5.
