VANCOUVER (ISN) – A new look BC Rugby Sevens Series has been confirmed for the 2012 summer season in British Columbia. Building on the success of the first two years which featured teams from across the Pacific West Coast region, the 2012 Sevens Series will have three types of tournaments to participate in.
Three tournaments will be endorsed as official stops on the BC Rugby Sevens Series circuit, and club teams registered within the BC Rugby Union will have the opportunity to accrue points towards a provincial championship. The three stops include the Vancouver Rugby Sevens on June 16; Burnaby Lake Lighthouse Sevens on July 7; and the Abbotsford Rugby Sevens on July 28. Teams eligible for a provincial title will have to attend all three BC Sevens Series events. These three tournaments were endorsed by BC Rugby for committing to field both a men’s and women’s team in all series stops. International and Invitational tournaments will also be hosted across the province and are open to both club and representative teams.
Burnaby Lake Rugby Club head into the 2012 Sevens Series as defending champions in both the women’s and men’s divisions. The Burnaby women’s program swept each of the five 2011 titles, finishing with 74 points in the Sevens Series standings.
Burnaby Lake’s men’s program finished on top of the 2011 standings with 46 points, 18 ahead of second place Bayside Selects. Burnaby competed in five of the six tournaments on the circuit, winning the Burnaby Lighthouse Sevens.
