VICTORIA, B.C. (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team are preparing for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championship next week, May 22-25 at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore.

A victory at the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) Championship last month, earned the Vikes their automatic berth to the 61st annual championship. Last week, the NAIA announced the first and second round pairings.

Following the AII conference championship, the Vikes men were at the forefront, carding a one-two individual finish by Carson Kallis (red Deer, Alta.) and James Holland (New Minas, NS). As a team, the UVic men finished one stroke ahead of Cal State-San Marcos for the title, while 2011 AII Champions, the UBC Thunderbirds finished in third.

Since joining the team in February, Kallis has been dominant on the field but consistent contributions throughout the year from teammates James Holland, Darren Hupfer, Sam Holland and Dylan Cann have undoubtedly added to the peaking success of the Vikes men’s golf team prior to the NAIA championship. Hupfer has been one of UVic’s top performers this season, with consistent top-ten performances including finishing second at the St. Martin’s Invitational, third at the Cal State-San Marcos Invitational and tying for eighth at the Battle at Primm.

“We are a totally new team this Spring. Our expectations are pretty high leading into both the NAIA and Canadian national championships,” said Vikes head coach Bryan Carbery. “We have two new leaders (Kallis and Hupfer) on the team who are potential All-Americans but all five of the boys have been working really hard at their game.”

First-round action of the NAIA men’s golf championship will take place on May 22 at 7:00 a.m. (PDT). The 159-player field includes 20 teams that automatically qualified through their respective conferences or group tournaments, eight at-large selections based on NAIA coaches’ Top 25 polls, as well as 14 individual qualifiers.

The Vikes will tee-off beginning at 12:50 p.m. (PDT) on hole No. 1 on May 22.

Immediately following the NAIA Championship, the Vikes will return home for a quick turnover, as UVic will host the Canadian University/College golf national championship conducted by Golf Canada, May 29-Jun 1 at Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria.

“NAIA championships have a lot stiffer competition and a much deeper field than the Canadian championship but we really have a legitimate shot at it this year,” said Carbery. “The Holland twins are working at bear mountain. Dylan works at Cordova Bay golf course and Carson and Darren have been playing a lot, too. There is no inspiration needed here. They just can’t wait to get at it.”
