EVERETT (ISN) – The Everett Silvertips today announced the signing of 1995-born defenseman Griffin Foulk to a Western Hockey League Educational Contract. The Silvertips acquired Foulk’s WHL rights in a trade with the Edmonton Oil Kings last fall.

Originally selected by Edmonton in the eighth round (#156 overall) of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Foulk, 17, came to the Silvertips along with a third-round draft pick in the November 24 deal that sent overage forward Tyler Maxwell to the Oil Kings. Everett used that draft choice (#66 overall) to take forward Matt Fonteyne.

A native of Broomfield, Colorado, Foulk split last season between the Colorado Thunderbirds Major Midget program and the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League (USHL). The 6-1, 180-pound defender scored one goal and added two assists in 23 games with the Thunderbirds before being called up to Tri-City in early January. Skating in 29 games with the Storm for the remainder of the season, Foulk contributed three assists and 26 penalty minutes to help Tri-City qualify for the USHL playoffs. He also chipped in an assist in two postseason games.

“We’re very excited that Griffin has committed to playing in the WHL for the Silvertips,” said General Manager Garry Davidson. “He skates very well and can move the puck, and we certainly expect big things out of him in the next few years. He’ll be coming in as a 17-year-old with a year of Junior-A experience under his belt and should give a boost to our defense corps. We’re glad to have him on board.”

The WHL Scholarship encourages its graduates to pursue a post-secondary education while also affording them the opportunity to continue playing hockey at an elite level in the Canadian University or College systems. For every season a player spends in the WHL, he receives a full year guaranteed Scholarship to a higher education institution. Each year over 300 WHL graduates attend a university or college on a WHL Scholarship.
