Victoria (ISN) – The Victoria Shamrocks will try to make it two wins in a row when they faceoff against the Maple Ridge Burrards at 7:45 pm on Friday night at Bear Mountain Arena.
The ‘Rocks got off on the right foot last Friday with an 11-7 victory over the Burnaby Lakers and will be adding two key pieces for their home opener, adding Corey Small and Ryan Benesch.
Small will make his return to the ‘Rocks after leading the team in scoring in 2011 with 29 goals, 41 assists, for a total of 70 points over an 18 game span. For Small the excitement has definitely been building as he gears up for his second season in the iconic green jersey.
“I love playing here, the history and tradition behind the whole Shamrocks organization in unbelievable, I’m really excited to be back with the Shamrocks,” said Small, a sentiment echoed by teammate and new ‘Rocks Captain Matt Lyons,
“There are some pretty special players in this league so to be able to play alongside one of them in Corey, is also pretty special,” says Lyons.
Also joining the team after a strong winter season of his own is Ryan Benesch. The 5’9, 180lbs forward is lead the Minnesota Swarm in scoring this year and with 5 years of pro lacrosse under his belt, Benesch will be counted on to be a big producer in his second stint with the green and white according to Head Coach Bob Heyes.
“He will be counted on to score some big goals for us, Ryan’s a great team guy; he makes the players around him better, provides leadership on and off the floor, and he is a guy who wants to be a Shamrock and that is what we are looking for.” Being a Victoria Shamrock comes with a big responsibility, there’s more to it than just producing on the floor and Ryan gets that. We’re really looking forward to working with Ryan again and expect big things from him as we build towards competing for the Mann Cup.”
The additions will be a welcome presence as the Shamrocks aim to build off of last week’s 11-7 victory in Burnaby. The team fared well against Maple ridge last season, sweeping the season series three games to none and outscoring their opponents 39-28; but with two of those games being settled by 2 goals or less, Coach Heyes says the Victoria side won’t be taking the Burrards lightly heading into the home opener.
“We are looking for a team effort every night, we are going to build on every game, there are always things we want to work on and we are going to do that game-by-game.”
The Victoria Shamrocks also want to remind fans that Friday’s home opener will serve as a “FREE FOR 63” celebration; where free admission will be provided to anyone who is 63 years old, born in 1963, attends school in district 63, or can prove any other type of 63. Also if the Shamrocks win 6-3 all fans in attendance receives a voucher to a future game. What a way to kick off the team’s historic 63rd season.
