SALEM, OR (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team wrapped up round three of NAIA national championship play today, May 24, at Creekside Golf Course in Salem, Ore. The Vikes men shot 8-over 296 today.

Despite spurts of torrential rain, the Vikes were able to come out strong on the front nine holes of round three action. Vikes leader Carson Kallis (Red Deer, Alta.) hit back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth hole to enter the back nine at 3-under-par. Kallis had troubles on the back nine and finished 1-over 72.

“They came out great and played the front nine under par,” said Vikes head coach Bryan Carbery. “The boys struggled through the last three holes on the front nine, shooting 10-over-par and that really cost us the chance to move up.”

Vikes second-year golfer Darren Hupfer (Edmonton, Alta.) had two double bogeys on the front nine and recovered with a birdie on hole 12 to finish 3-over 75.

Fourth-year Dylan Cann (Calgary, Alta.) improved his second round score by three shots to finish 2-over 74 in round three. Cann carded birdies on the first, ninth and 13th hole to remain even but a double bogey on the 16th and 18th hole proved costly.

“The 16th hole cost us six shots today,” said Carbery after round three play. “This hole just cost us period even though we played it under par the first two rounds of the tournament. We are a solid top 10 team and would like to move up but we have a few teams ahead of us we need to beat by quite a few shots now.”

Samuel Holland (New Minas, NS) finished the day 5-over 77, while brother James Holland (New Minas, NS) matched team mate Hupfer at 3-over 75, with impressive birdie finishes on the second, sixth and 13th holes.

The Vikes will regroup for the final round of NAIA championship play tomorrow, May 25, before returning to Victoria to prepare for the 2012 Canadian University/College National Championship May 29-Jun 1.
