Island teams off to strong start at BCSSRU Provincial Championships

The British Columbia Secondary Schools Rugby Championship kicked off this weekend, with Brentwood College in Mill Bay hosting 6 first round match ups. The tournament which features the top 16 teams from across the Province in ‘AAA’ and ‘AA’ rugby will then head to Abbotsford’s Rotary Stadium for the remainder of the schedule.

The Island was well represented in the tournament with ‘AAA’ #1 ranked Shawnigan Lake cruising past #16 West Vancouver 69-0, #2 Oak Bay charged by #15 Claremont 41-0, #5 Earl Marriott from Surrey stormed past #12 Cowichan 54-0 and #7 SMU had their hands full with #10 G.P. Vanier needing overtime to secure a 24-19 victory.

On the ‘AA’ side host Brentwood College, the #2 seed, had no trouble downing #15 Esquimalt 81-0 and #4 Glenlyon Norfolk  scored a try just before time to squeak by #13 Ladysmith 15-10.

‘AAA’ semi – final action will see #1 Shawnigan Lake take on #9 Lord Byng of Vancouver, #2 Oak Bay faces #7 SMU, #3 Carson Graham of North Vancouver meets #11 Handsworth also from North Vancouver and #4 St. George’s in Vancouver will challenge #5 Earl Marriott of Surrey.

On the ‘AA’ side West Vancouver’s #1 Collingwood battles West Vancouver’s #8 Mulgrave, #2 Brentwood take on #10 Southridge from Surrey,  #3 Rockridge from West Vancouver meet up with #6 Okanagan Mission from Kelowna and #4 Glenlyon Norfolk match up with #5 Hugh McRoberts of Richmond.
