Kiers Takes Top Spot for the Women
Shawnigan Lake, BC (ISN) – Beautiful weather greeted athletes from as far away as Hong Kong, Mexico and New Zealand Sunday at the 6th annual Subaru Shawnigan Lake Triathlon.
Both men’s and women’s divisions in the pro field saw many athletes return to defend their championship titles and take another shot at a podium finish, including Nathan Killiam, Adam O’Meara, Rachel Kiers and Janet Nielsen.
In the pro women’s field of the Half Iron race, Rachel Kiers, who won the Shawnigan Lake Triathlon in 2010, beat second-place finisher Stephanie Ossenbrink of Richmond, BC by almost 10 minutes with a finishing time of 4:24:41. Kiers and Ossenbrink were minutes apart on the swim and the bike, but Kiers blasted a 1:28 run split to overtake Ossenbrink during the run.
On the men’s side, Kyle Marcotte of Calgary lead out of the water but was overtaken on the bike by Wade Carlson of Penticton. O’Meara battled all the way back from fourth place to run the fastest split of the day of 1:19:04, beating out second-place finisher Carlson with a time of 4:05:01 and taking the Championship title for the second year in a row.
The Subaru Shawnigan Lake Triathlon is the first race in the Subaru Western Triathlon Series. The next stop on the Series is June 17th at Elk Lake in Victoria. Full results for today are available at www.triseries.ca.
