Both teams showcased some enthusiasm and competitive spirit to begin the match which created some great scoring opportunities but it was United’s Cooper Barry who was first on the scoreboard when he dribbled through the Highlander’s defense and beat their keeper Elliot Mitrou on the near post in the 16th minute.
Both teams controlled the pace of the match throughout the remainder of the first half with Victoria United up 1-0 at half time.
The second half called on both teams’ reserves to step in and finish the 45 minutes of play. The Highlanders came out strong into the second half of play and United’s keeper Andrew Fitzpatrickcame up with a wonderful save off a one timer at the 58th minute. However, the Highlanders equaled the score at the 60th minute with a scramble in United’s 18 yard box and Highlanders Garth Langdon’s shot would tie it up.
In the 81st minute a goal from Connor McManaman from a header off a corner kick found the Highlanders up 2-1. The Highlanders held off some late game pressure by United to hold on to a 2-1 victory and reclaim the Charity Shield Cup.
A great evening was had by all and both clubs would like to thank all their fans for coming out to support the 2012 derby and MS Kick for the Cure.
