VICTORIA B.C. (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby program has produced three athletes named to Rugby Canada’s men’s Under 20 team set to compete at the IRB’s Junior World Rugby Trophy (JWRT) 2012. The championship takes place in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jun. 18-30.

Second-year Vike Michael Fuailefau (Victoria, BC) will compete for Canada in his second JWRT, following last year’s fifth-place finish in Georgia. Outside half and regular Vikes starter Patrick Kay (Duncan, B.C.), as well as prop Jake Ilnicki (Williams Lake, BC) were also selected to the team.

“We have a group of leaders within the team, but it’s not only the guys coming back from last year,” said Mike Shelley, Rugby Canada’s men’s U-20 team coach. “Jake Ilnicki, as tight head prop, plays one of the most important positions on the team and he has shown over the past few months that he has good leadership qualities as well.”

The JWRT represents a first opportunity for athletes to compete on the international stage. Kieran Crowley, head coach of the senior national team, will be watching the tournament looking for prospective athletes, as Canada prepares for both the Rugby World Cup 2015 and the 2016 Olympic Games.

“This experience will really help for when they return to the Vikes,” said Vikes men’s rugby head coach Doug Tate. “They will play very physical teams and get a level of competition that they don’t see here. This will be a good measuring stick for where they are in their development.”

In pool play Canada will face Japan, Zimbabwe and Georgia. Japan has been the runner up at the JWRT for the past two years and in 2011 Geogria picked up the bronze while, Zimbabwe finished eighth.
