Nanaimo (ISN) – The Victoria Mariners Junior Premier baseball team travelled to Nanaimo Wednesday night and defeated the Pirates 6-4 in BC Junior Premier Baseball League action.
It was a cool evening for a June 6th weeknight game between the Victoria Jr. Mariners and the Nanaimo Jr. Pirates. Heading into the game, both teams were sitting in 8th place in the league, 9 games behind first place Langley.
The game was uneventful and moved quickly with no one reaching base from either team thanks to the fine pitching of Mariner starter Tanner Hess and Nanaimo starter Zach Diewert.
In the top of the 4th, the Mariners broke the game open. With runners on second and third and one out, Brandon Ashford stroked a 2-RBI double to put the Mariners up 2-0. Ashford was then brought home on a single by Zach Downey to make it 3-0. After a hit batter and a second out, Lucas Piechnik tripled to score 2 more and then came home himself on a throwing error to put the M’s up 6-0.
The Pirates would get 2 of those runs back in the bottom of the 4th when Aidan Goodall launched a 2-run homer and while they added another run in the bottom of the 5th and 6th they could not make up the difference losing by the final score of 6-4.
Tanner Hess got the win for the Mariners giving up 3 runs on 2 hits while striking out 7 in his 5 innings of work. Dakota St. Laurent and Mitch Bryan came on in relief with Bryan earning the save.
