Victoria (ISN) – James Bay Athletic Association hosted their annual Buccaneer 7’s Rugby tournament on Saturday. This year’s tournament featured 6 Men’s teams – JBAA, Untouchables, BC U18, Global Fijian Lighthouse, Western Washington University and South Seas Connection along with 4 U16 Boys teams.

Global Fijian Lighthouse took top honors with a hard fought victory over the South Seas Connection that went down to the wire. The score was tied a 7-7 at the half, Global Fijian Lighthouse opened up a 21-7 lead early in the 2nd half only to have South Seas Connection close to within a try and continue to press for the equalizer, but it was Global Fijian Lighthouse that broke through for a try in the final minutes to secure a 28-14 victory.

The U16 boys featured some of the top up and coming players from across the Province. The British Columbia Rugby Union’s decision to run an elite youth sevens program seems to have paid off as these boys showed some real talent, and with Sevens rugby becoming an Olympic event in 2016 and 2020, Canada future looks bright.

The day concluded with an 15 a side exhibition match between the Canada U20 and St. Andrews University of Scotland. Early predictions had Canada winning with relative ease but no one expected a 118 – 0 shellacking by Canada.
