Vikes to Open 2012-2013 Basketball Season at Home, November 2-3

Victoria (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s basketball team will open their 2012-2013 Canada West Basketball season at home with a double-header against UBC-Okanagan on Fri. Nov. 2 and Sat. Nov. 3.

The announcement of the 2012-13 basketball schedules is part of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) kickoff week that will outline the 2012-13 full list of dates and times for the CWUAA schedules and championships.

Today, Jun 11, the Canada West announced the newly expanded, 16-team mens’ and women’s basketball conference shcedules. The Moutn Royal Cougars (from ACAC) and the UNBC Timberwolces (from BCCAA) will join the conference and its 22-game schedule for the first time, eliminating the post-season Wild Card berth. Instead, the top four teams from both eight-team divisions, the Prairie and Pacific, qualify for the playoffs.

Both new schools will join the Pacific Division, meaning Mount Royal and Calgary will host from the same city, but in different divisions. Also, new this season is an expanded number of mid-week events with Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night games.

The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s basketball team will open at home with a double-header against UBC-Okanagan on Fri. Nov. 2 and Sat. Nov. 3. The Vikes women will play at 6:00 p.m. and the men will follow at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and at 5:00p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. All home games will be played at Ken and Kathy Shields Court in the McKinnon building at the University of Victoria.

The Vikes’ first away games will be in their second weekend of play, as both teams will travel to the University of Fraser Valley and face the Cascades in a double header on Fri. Nov. 9 and Sat. Nov. 10. Game times will also be 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men.

The Vikes will play their UBC Thunderbird rivals in a pivotal two-game series to conclude the Canada West season on Feb. 15-16.

Best-of-three quarter-finals will take place Feb. 22-24, with the highest-seeded QF series winners hosting the Final Four events the weekend of March 1-2. The women’s Regionals are Mar. 8-10, the same time as the men’s CIS Final 8 national championship, hosted by Carleton University in Ottawa The women’s Final 8 tournament will be Mar. 15-17 at the University of Regina, where the Cougars are guaranteed a spot as host.
