Brent McMahon Confirmed to Use Victoria Event as Olympic Tune-Up
Victoria, BC (ISN) – Excitement is building for the 17th annual Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon, happening this Sunday at Elk Lake Park.
London-bound Olympian Brent McMahon has confirmed he will be participating in the Half Iron distance at event on a relay team with 2008 Olympian Carolyn Murray as part of his preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Murray competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in triathlon.
“After so much local support in helping me qualify for London 2012 I look forward to participating in a local race with all my supporters and fellow local triathletes,” says McMahon.
McMahon will do the 1.9 kilometre swim and 86 kilometre bike portion of theevent on June 17 and Murray will do the two-loop 21.2 km run around Elk Lake to finish the race.
The Pro field for this year’s event will also make for an exciting race; last year’s Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon Champion Adam O’Meara, who recently won the Subaru Shawnigan Lake Triathlon on May 27, will be back to defend his title in the Half Iron event. Elites Nathan Killiam, last year’s Half Iron Champion Sara Gross, and Series podium finishers Lucy Smith and Janet Nielsen will also be competing.
Besides the Pros racing for championship titles, Age Groupers will be competing for 20 coveted Ironman Canada Qualifying spots available at this event.
Close to 1000 participants in total will be competing in the Sprint, Olympic or Half Irondistances on Sunday, with almost 450 of those coming from outside of the Victoria area. Athletes from all across Canada and the US and as far away as Australia, Mexico and Macau arrived in Victoria with their family and friends this week to take part in race weekend festivities, which also includes theSaunders Family Walk and Danone Kids’ Fun Run on Saturday afternoon at Hamsterly Beach at Elk Lake Park.
