New Westminster, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Shamrocks travelled to New Westminster Thursday evening and were haded their first loss of the season by the Salmonbellies, 14-12 in OT.

The first meeting between WLA rivals the Victoria Shamrocks and the New West Salmonbellies was certainly a physical one. As many people expected it didn’t take too long for both teams to renew their rivalry for 2012, as the pace was intense right from the opening faceoff. The Salmonbellies would break the deadlock five minutes in, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Martin Cummings and Jordan McBride coming just 24 seconds apart. Jeff Shattler though would score just minutes later with a low shot to make it 2-1. After New West tallied again to make the score 3-1, Victoria would be forced to go a man down as Reed MacPhail picked up a 5 minute major, and would allow a power play goal against. Ryan Benesch would pick up two short handed goals however, including a beauty, coming out of the corner and showing great hands as he tucked it past the New West keeper. The ‘Rocks would close the first frame down by a 5-3 score.

The ‘Rocks came roaring out of the gates to start the second, picking up four quick goals from Shattler, Corey Small, Kyle Morwick, and Benesch respectively to take a 7-6 lead. New West would manage three consecutive goals of their own though, on efforts from Ilija Gajic, Tyler Crompton and a great solo diving play from Martin Cummings, to regain the lead and head into the second break ahead 8-7.

A fairly stingy first half of the 3rd period saw few goals scored as the furious pace and end to end action continued with New West eventually jumping out to a 10-7 lead. The Shamrocks strong power play though was able to muster two goals thanks to brilliant passing plays with the man advantage, finished off deftly by Benesch. Kory Kowalyk would add one with just 2:35 left in the frame to tie it up and send this one to an extra frame.

Overtime would add more thrills to this instant classic as Kevin Crowley walked in alone and buried to give the ‘bellies a lead. Shattler would reply right back for the Green and White however evening the game at 11 each. After Crowley added his second of the added period, Brock Armour would tie it up again as he streaked out of the penalty box to receive a long pass and buried his break away attempt to level again at 12-12. It was not meant to be however as Ilija Gajic ripped a low hard one past Flindell with just 44 seconds left to all but seal victoria’s fate. New West would add another taking the 14-12 victory, and handing Victoria their first loss on the season. For New West it was a much-needed victory for a squad coming off of a three game losing streak
