VANCOUVER – British Columbia’s next generation of rugby hopefuls will take to the pitch in a mid-week series against touring side Northern California Youth Rugby Association, including games Thursday at Wallace Field at the University of Victoria.

The TrueBlue BC Rugby U15 and U17 boys provincial teams will face the NCYRA Junior and Varsity squads in a double header this Tuesday at Brockton Oval in Vancouver, followed by a pair of fixtures at UVic’s Wallace Field on Vancouver Island this Thursday.

With the creation of these two new programs, for the first time in BC Rugby’s 123 year history there will be age grade boy’s / men’s teams operational at every age from U14 to U19.

4:30pm, June 19th: BC U15 Boys vs NCYRA Junior Varsity (at Brockton Oval, Vancouver)

6:00pm, June 19th: BC U17 Men vs NCYRA Junior Varsity (at Brockton Oval, Vancouver)

4:00pm, June 21st: BC U15 Boys vs NCYRA Junior Varsity (at Wallace Field, UVic, Victoria)

5:30pm, June 21st: BC U17 Men vs NCYRA Varsity (at Wallace Field, UVic, Victoria)

Much of the U17 activity for the 2012 summer season is centred around a partnership with the Northern California Youth Rugby Association, a perennial powerhouse at all USA Rugby National Championship youth events. The NCYRA is comprised of more than 90 clubs, 200 teams, 4,000 players (boys and girls) all playing in 13 youth divisions.

The BC U17s will contest for the TrueBlue BC NorCal Cup in a three games series against the NCYRA. The first two matches are in BC this week with the third and final leg hosted in San Francisco on July 27th. While on tour in San Francisco, The BC U17 squad will also be divided into teams where they will compete in the NCYRA Sevens Championship Tournament set for Sunday, July 29th at Northwest Park in Dixon, California.

The BC U17 selections are made up of BC Rugby Academy members who have been training alongside one another since lifting the U16 national championship last August in Calgary. Captaining the side on Tuesday evening is Capilano RFC standout Marshall Fuller. A member of the Canadian Under-17 national team that toured England this past Spring, Fuller has also tasted success in the sevens code, recently winning the Last Vegas High School Invitational this past February with the BC U17 team.

Thursday’s U17 roster will be made up of Vancouver Island selects and the roster will be announced later in the week.

Coached by Mike Stiles and Daniel Weidner, the U15 squad for Tuesday evening features a number of recent graduates from the BC U14 provincial program. Captaining the side will be Jake Thiel, a member of Abbotsford RFC’s junior program. Both Jake and his brother Josh were standouts for BC’s U14 national championship winning side in 2011 and will look to continue their rise up the rugby ranks together on Tuesday. Capilano’s Liam Doll has been selected as alternate captain.

As a result of the capacity established through the U14 provincial program, a youth elite player base exists for both a BC Island and BC Mainland U15 rosters. Each team will take on the NCYRA’s Junior Varsity team as a curtain raiser to the U17 fixtures in Vancouver and Victoria.
