Victoria, BC – The Victoria Shamrocks have announced they have acquired Derek Lowe from the Maple Ridge Burrards in exchange for the Shamrocks 2nd round pick in the 2013 WLA draft.
The 6’0 180lbs offensive player was leading Maple Ridge in scoring at the time of the transaction with 12 goals, 21 assists, 33 points, and 17 pims in 11 games. Lowe is expected to bring an offensive flair and some added leadership to a young Shamrocks team that has compiled a strong record this season (6-2).
Shamrocks GM Chris Welch said of the acquisition, “We have a young team and adding a guy like Derek will help stabilize our leadership group. We also felt we needed to balance our scoring more going forward and he gives us added goal scoring and playmaking ability so when the opportunity arose to get him we felt it was too good to pass up.”
Lowe, a perennial top 20 scorer, is a nine year veteran of the WLA with 197 goals, 195 assists for 392 points and 192 pims in 161 games played. Lowe has been recognized for his service to his community as a past recipient of the WLA’s prestigious Maitland Trophy for Outstanding Play Sportsmanship Assistance to Minor Lacrosse.
While Lowe has yet to meet all of his new teammates in Green and White, challenging for a championship is something very much on his radar, “I’m very excited to be coming to Victoria,” said Lowe, “it’s obviously a very historic club that’s also a contender and Bear Mountain has always been one of my favorite places to play. I really think we have a good shot to go far this year and hopefully be playing into September.”
