Victoria, BC (ISN) – The new Head Coach and General Manager of the Victoria Grizzlies, Bill Bestwick, has been busy in his first few weeks on the job, as the Grizzlies today announced a number of roster moves and signings in preparation for the 2012-2013 season.

One of the first moves was the signing of defenseman Eben Norman who patrolled the blue line for North Delta Junior B in the PIJHL last season. Norman is an impressive 6′ 3″, 190 pound defenseman and is heralded as one of the most promising players coming out of the PIJHL and has the proven ability to play in all situations.

“Victoria is a great city with facilities and fans that are second to none,” said Norman. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to play with and be a part of rebuilding the Grizzlies team. I look forward to the training camp.”

“Eben is extremely mature on and off the ice and is committed to raising the profile of our organization,” said Bestwick. “He possesses exceptional skill and his confidence in our organization’s direction will benefit all of us.”

The Grizzlies also announced the acquisition of veteran forward Bret Hartskamp from Swan Valley Stampeders of the MJHL. Hartskamp played two seasons for the Nanaimo Clippers before being traded to Swan Valley.

“I am really excited to be a Victoria Grizzly and play for Bill again,” said Hartskamp. “Bill gave me my first Junior “A” opportunity and to finish my career in Victoria helping rebuild the franchise is all the motivation I could ask for.”

Hartskamp is a versatile 20 year old forward, measuring in at 6′, and 180lbs and comes to the Victoria Grizzlies driven to have his best season of Junior “A” Hockey.

“Brett is a quality young man who will bring character and hard work to our uniform and can play in a top six role,” said Bestwick.

On the trade front, the Grizzlies have completed a major, multi-player deal with the Westside Warriors, sending 1992 goaltender Garrett Rockafellow and 1993 defenseman Braxton Bilous to Westside in exchange for 1993 goalie Brady Rouleau and 1993 forward Garrett Skrbich.

Rouleau was a standout for the Cowichan Valley Capitals last season and the Victoria Grizzlies are thrilled to add such an impressive starting goaltender for the start of the 2012 – 13 season. Rouleau is 6’1 and 175 lbs.

Garrett Skrich enters his second season in the BCHL and measures at an impressive 6′, 200 lbs with good experience and offensive capacity. Skrbich is already committed to Princeton of the NCAA for 2013 and will be counted on to raise the compete level and depth of the forward position.

“The addition of both Brady and Garrett will strengthen our roster for September,” states Bestwick. “Both players have proven ability and will compete at the highest level on a consistent basis.”

The Victoria Grizzlies want to thank both Garrett Rockafellow and Braxton Bilous for their commitment and service to the Victoria Grizzlies and wish them success in the future.

The Victoria Grizzlies Training Camp commences August 20th.
