Victoria, BC (ISN) – Zach Downey and Kieran Russell each had a pair of hits and Dallas Patterson pitched six innings of three-hit ball to help lead the Victoria Junior Mariners to an easy 8-1 win over the Victoria Eagles in BC Junior Premier Baseball League action Thursday night at Lambrick Park.
The Mariners would score a pair of runs off Eagle starter Eric Hegadoren in the first, courtesy of an RBI single by Downey and an RBI double by Brandon Ashford and then add to that lead in the top of the second as Kieran Russell would stroke the first of his two hits on the night, both triples, and come home to score on a Mitch Bryan ground out.

A trio of Eagle errors in the top of the fourth inning led to a fourth Mariner run, as Bryan would scamper home when Downey reached base on an errant throw.
Meanwhile Mariner starter Patterson was cruising through the Eagle line-up through the first five innings, with the greatest damage being a pair of Eagle runners that he put on base in the 4th. Key strikeouts and some clutch defence, notably by Downey at third base, kept the Eagles off the board however.

The Mariners would break things open in the top of the sixth. Facing Zach Deol, the fifth Eagles’ pitcher of the night (the Eagles were trying to conserve arms heading into a four game weekend and used seven different pitchers in total) Russell stroked his second triple of the game and later came home to score on a passed ball.

Bryan, who walked, also came in to score on a balk, and Lucas Piechnik, who also walked, came home on an RBI-double by Dakota St. Laurent. The Mariners completed their scoring in the inning when Jacob Barnard lofted a sacrifice fly that scored Downey, who earlier had walked, making the score 8-0.

The Eagles would finally find a way to get to Patterson in the bottom of the sixth, as Jordan Parmar would lead off with a walk, steal second and then come home to score on an error by the shortstop that allowed Jack Mackinnon to reach. That would be the end of the Eagle rally however, as Patterson then induced two ground outs to end the inning.
That set the stage for closer St. Laurent, who came in to pitch the final inning for the Mariners, retiring the Eagles three-up, three-down to close out the 8-1 win.
