VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria is pleased to announce the appointment of current assistant coach Dani Sinclair as the associate coach for the Vikes women’s basketball team in the upcoming 2012-13 season.
Due to personal circumstances, Vikes head coach Rich Chambers will be unable to fulfill the day-to-day head coaching responsibilities for the program for the 2012-13 season. Chambers will assume overall leadership of the women’s basketball program but will prioritize program management and recruitment for the coming year.
“We are very confident in Dani Sinclair’s abilities to guide the Vikes women’s basketball program at this time,” said Clint Hamilton, director of Athletics and Recreation. “Dani has demonstrated great leadership both as a player and assistant coach for the Vikes and we are confident in her ability to continue the work that coach Chambers and her began last season.”
Sinclair, a former Vikes basketball player, brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience. The former CIS rookie of the year was a three-time OUA All-Star with the McMaster Marauders and was the captain of the Vikes team that captured the 2002-03 national championship.
“There couldn’t be a better person for the job,” said Chambers about Sinclair’s appointment. “Dani knows the players well and has worked under several great coaches. She is young but very experienced and will do a great job with the girls. That is not a worry for me what-so-ever.”
A fully certified NCCP Level III coach, Sinclair has also been a big part of the success of Basketball B.C.’s regional training program, was an assistant coach for Canada at the 2011 Pan American games and is currently leading the Under-15 B.C. provincial team.
“Rich and I will maintain our great working relationship throughout the year,” said Sinclair. “He will continue to mentor and guide me as I take on this opportunity. We are both very happy with the work our returning players have been putting in during the off-season and are very excited for the talented recruiting class to join us in the fall.”
The Vikes women’s basketball season will begin their Canada West campaign in November, hosting a double header against UBC-Okanagan on Nov. 2-3 at McKinnon Gym.
“I feel very fortunate that the university will allow me to continue to be an integral part of the program,” continued Chambers. “I will stay as actively involved as I can, as Basketball Canada intends for me to be involved in their summer programs next year.”
