Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Firefighters jumped out to a 4-0 lead and then held off a tough Blazers team to win 8-4 and secure the 2012 Victoria Senior C Lacrosse League Championship Thursday night at the Panorama Recreation Centre in Sidney.

It looked like this game was going to be a one sided affair, as the League champion Firefighters rode 2 first period goals by Tom Woods and a long-distance buzzer beater by Buck Stobart to a 3-0 first period lead.

They would then add another early in the second period and that 4-0 lead held up until approximately the halfway point of the period when the Blazers would score two quick goals to make it 4-2.

The Blazers, who had yet to beat the Firefighters all season, would pull within one at 4-3 to make things exciting, but the Firefighters would respond with another late goal, this one with 25 seconds left in the period and on the power play, to hold a 5-3 lead at the second intermission.

Things would get interesting in the third, as the Blazers would pull within one again at 5-4 five minutes into the period, but the Firefighters would remain calm and answer back on the power play to go up 6-4 with just over 12 minutes remaining.

The Blazers, who seemed to draw the attention of the referees all night, continued to have penalty troubles after that and the Firefighters would capitalize on that, scoring two late goals, both on the power play to make the final score 8-4.
