Sylvainia, Ohio (ISN) – At some point every child that dons a ball glove or swings a bat, dreams of winning a World Series. That dream came true for three island boys July 28.
Jason Willow of Victoria, along with Devin Kirby and Derek Krall of Nanaimo, were all selected to represent Team BC at the 2012 Continental Amateur Baseball Association U12 World Series in Sylvania, Ohio July 23-28.
Just to compete in an event of this magnitude is an accomplishment but to win the title while going a perfect 8-0 is quite a feat.
The tournament began with 11 teams competing in round robin play. The boys opened the tournament with a 5-3 victory over the Springfield Bulldogs, downed the Cincinnati Yankees 10-2, battled the Indiana Elite to a 10-7 win then hammered the Lake County Coyotes 14-3 to sit atop the standings after round robin play.
Jason Willow of Team BC was named Tournament MVP at the CABA U12World Series in Sylvania, Ohio.
The top eight teams from the round robin now moved on to the Gold Bracket double knock out portion of the tournament. Team BC opened with a 13-1 shellacking of the Wisconsin River Cats.
Team BC would then meet up with the Springfield Bulldogs in what is being called one of the best games of the tournament. The Bulldogs were determined to get revenge for 5-3 round robin loss earlier in the tournament and the boys from BC were just as determined to not let that happen.
The Bulldogs took a 1st inning 2-0 lead but BC quickly answered back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Springfield managed to tie the game in the 2nd and it remained that way until the 6th inning when BC got on the bats and scored 3 runs to stake a 6-3 lead. Starting pitcher Jason Willow shut the door on the Bulldogs offence to finish with a complete game, 9 strike out performance.
It was another nail biter of a game in the semi-finals for Team BC as they faced the Warriors Baseball Club from Farmington, MI. BC got out to a 4-0 lead but the Warriors fought back and brought it to 4-3 in the 4th inning. Reliever Sam Shoemaker found his groove and stymied the Warrior batters including striking out the side in the 7th to preserve the win and a trip to the finals.
Team BC would meet up with Wisconsin River Cats once more and were trailing 3-2 after 4 innings of play. The bats came alive in the 5th for BC, as Willow hit a 2 run single to put the BC boys in the lead and they never looked back, putting up 8 runs in the inning for a 10-3 lead. They would add another in the 6th, off a Willow single to bring the 8 run mercy rule into effect and take home the Championship.

The boys are back home and preparing for the Provincials next week.
