Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Provincial Jr. B Lacrosse Championships began Friday morning at Bear Mountain Arena with two local rivals facing off and it was the host West Shore Bears knocking off the Saanich Tigers 11-8.
The Bears got out to a 3-0 lead by the 7:48 mark, the first coming from Sam Vandemeer at 1:28. Jake Carter picked up an assisted tally at 3:53 and at 7:48 it was Cam Anderson beating starting Saanich goaltender Jarod Jackson. Saanich solved West Shore goalie Cody Cook at the 13:40 mark on a delayed penalty call. Goals came in a rush after that with a total of 5 goals in the final 2:20 of the period, 3 from the Bears including two power play goals and 2 from the Tigers including one shorthanded. The score after 20 minutes was West Shore 6 and Saanich 3.

Saanich struck early in period 2, Mason Pynn gathering in a long outlet pass from goaltender Jackson and burying it at 1:58. Penalties continued to hurt Saanich as West Shore picked up a power play goal off the stick of captain Sam Chiasson at 7:44. That was followed by Adam Donald’s tally at 8:50. The teams traded goals before the end of the period, Adam West-Patrick scoring for Saanich at 12:43 and Jackson Holmes replying for the host Bears at 15:09. That signaled the end of the night for Tigers goaltender Jackson as he was replaced by Tyler Hunt.
The visiting Saanich squad won the third period 3-2 and had several chances with the man advantage, West Shore taking 4 of the 5 minor penalties called in the period. The final score West Shore Bears 11, Saanich Tigers 8.
Unofficially Sam Chiasson and Cam Anderson each scored twice for the victorious Bears. The West Shore MVP of the game was goaltender Cody Cook who kicked out 36 of the 44 shots he faced.
For the Tigers it was Quinton Hamilton picking up a pair and Colton Rabey collecting a goal and a pair of assists. Trevor Hansen was chosen as the game MVP for Saanich.
Both teams play again later today (Friday). West Shore will take on Delta at 5:30 while Saanich will face Kamloops at 8:30.
Kamloops and Delta are playing in the other early game in progress at the time of this writing.
