Sooke, BC (ISN) – The community of Sooke is gearing up for the area’s biggest sporting event this weekend – the 6th annual Subaru Sooke Triathlon. Athletes from all across Canada and the US and as far away as Italy and France arrived in Sooke this week for the event, which will be nationally televised again this year on TSN.

The race has attracted several world class pro triathletes, including Ironman 70.3 Champion Magali Tisseyre, whojust recently won Calgary Ironman 70.3. Tisseyre will be up against local championship runner and triathlete Lucy Smith, as well as Dutch-Canadian triathlete Lisa Mensink, who competed at the 2008 Olympic Games.

On the men’s side, top triathletes Jeff Symonds and Jordan Bryden will battle both the men and women for the top spot in the chase – the “Pro Chase” format gives the women a 15 minute head-start on the men, and both men and women will compete head-to-head for the top prize and to be named the Sooke Triathlon Champion.

The chance to see the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island was also enough to convince The Biggest Loser season seven finalist Tara Costa to participate in event.

The popular former contestant on the weight loss reality show, who lost 155 pounds during the 18 weeks she spent on The Biggest Loser campus, has since completed several Sprint, Olympic and Half-Iron distance triathlons, including the 2011 Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI. When invited to participate in the Sooke event, Costa jumped at the chance to experience Vancouver Island’s west coast as a destination race participant.

Costa will participate in either the Olympic or Sprint distance at the event, and will give a motivational talk the day before the race in Sooke. Costa continues to inspire others on their own weight-loss journey by leading by example and through her non-profit organization, the Inspire Change Foundation.
