Victoria (ISN) – Garrett Brandsma has been acquired by the Victoria Cougars from the Comox Valley Glacier Kings in exchange for cash. A former all-star, Brandsma, 18, will provide Victoria with skill, offensive prowess, and competitiveness.
“Garrett is a great player in this league. Not only is he talented but he plays each and every game like it is his last,” Cougars head coach Mark Van Helvoirt said. “That type of competitiveness is infectious with your teammates.”
Born in Powell River, British Columbia, Brandsma appeared in 74 regular season games and collected 57 points in two full-time campaigns with Comox Valley. However, 14 of his goals and 25 of his assists came last season where he finished second in team scoring and tied for 16th in league scoring.
For Brandsma, the 5’10, 160 lb. forward is upbeat about the upcoming season.
“I am really excited to play for Victoria and am looking forward to putting my talents to good use for my new team and teammates.”
And the feelings are mutual.
“Garrett is a very dedicated player who is committed to helping us in our attempts to win another championship. He brings leadership and experience to our team and will be a great role model for our younger players,” Cougars assistant coach Thomas Kala said.
A proven top-six forward, Brandsma will be looked upon to fill the holes left behind by several graduating players.
“We are very pleased with the acquisition of Garrett,” Van Helvoirt said. “We are all looking forward to seeing what he can do in a Cougars uniform.”
Brandsma, a graduate of Brooks Secondary School, will be continuing his education while in Victoria.
