Photographer / Reporter Nanaimo Area

ISN is expanding its Island coverage and has a specific need for a volunteer or intern photographer/reporter in the Nanaimo area who would be responsible for photographing and reporting primarily on the Nanaimo Clippers Jr. A hockey team in the BCHL. The successful candidate may also be asked to cover other sporting events as needed and as their schedule permits.

Applicants should have their own professional or “pro-sumer” camera equipment, and ensure that it will be suitable for shooting the sport of hockey in sometimes challenging lighting conditions (i.e. dark arenas). Applicants should also be available to attend all home games for the team.

Applicants should also have some experience in sports writing – even if it has just been summarizing your child’s games – or at least be comfortable in providing a nice summary of the game details as needed.

General Requirements and “Nice to Haves”

  • Pro or “Pro-sumer” level photography equipment (no point and shoots allowed!).
  • Personal laptop and photo editing software (e.g. Lightroom, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, etc.) and good knowledge of photo editing techniques
  • Ability to transmit photos via e-mail or Internet transfer
  • A willingness to work flexible hours and according to schedules and deadlines
  • Your own mode of transportation

    Editorial, Photo and Web Publishing Interns – Open

    Island Sports News (ISN) has immediate openings for seasonal or full-time interns for our editorial, photography and web publishing & social media departments. 

    As an intern with ISN you will gain valuable work experience in the world of sports and sports reporting, especially at the local and community level.  As the #1 source for community and amateur sports related news on Vancouver Island, the Pacific Northwest and beyond, ISN is rapidly growing to cover other areas and other sports and we would like you to be a part of that!

    As a web based media outlet, we work in a fast paced environment where stories can hit the “airwaves” just moments after the game or event is complete.  As such, interns will also learn the ins and outs of working to deadlines, web publishing, social media sharing and article distribution. 

    All internships are unpaid positions.


    Editorial Interns

    We need editorial interns who can help expand our coverage of local and community sports at all levels especially high school, college, and minor sports associations across Vancouver Island.  The interns will write news, features and articles for publication on our web site;  assist with research, event/game scheduling and coordination;  learn what it’s like to be copy edited and to work side by side with an assigning editor to improve their stories (from the concept stage through publication); and they will have the opportunity to interact with athletes, sports analysts, coaches and team management and administrators to develop a network that is extremely valuable in this segment of journalism.

    General Requirements and “Nice to Haves”

    • A genuine passion for sports combined with proficiency in written as well as verbal communication
    • General knowledge of sports and sports associations, schools , etc in Victoria and throughout Vancouver Island
    • a willingness to work flexible hours
    • Your own mode of transportation
    • Access to computer and high speed Internet connection (ISN can provide limited desktop computer/office access should it be needed).

    Photography Interns / Volunteers

    If you have a keen interest in sports photography, wish to increase the exposure of your sports images, learn how to improve your sports photography and have your work published on a regular basis, then consider joining our team of photographers.  Photography is key to our success and simply put, we need more lenses covering more action at more venues.  Photographers will work in tandem with our reporters and editors to provide the visual content for our stories and will learn valuable techniques in sports shooting, post-processing (cropping, lighting adjustments, etc.) and deadline driven deliver y of high quality sports imagery.

    • Pro or “Pro-sumer” level photography equipment (no point and shoots allowed!).
    • Personal laptop and photo editing software (e.g. Lightroom, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, etc.) and good knowledge of photo editing techniques

    • Your own mode of transportation

    Web Publishing / Social Media Intern

    Our web publishing / social media intern will assist the Editor in publishing and posting content that is received from both our reporters and photographers, but also from the numerous other sources, associations and individuals that we receive stories from.  The intern will also be responsible for cross-posting our content to our various social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Google +, etc.) and they will learn and help improve how a small media outlet uses its website and social media to help attract new readers. 

    General Requirements and “Nice to Haves”

    • A genuine passion for sports combined with proficiency in written as well as verbal communication
    • Strong knowledge of the Joomla Content Management System (CMS) for posting web content, or familiarity with similar web-based CMS’s.
    • Understanding of the basic principles of graphic design, layout, web publishing
    • Strong understanding of popular and emerging  social media platforms and how they can be utilized for content sharing and distribution
    • a willingness to work flexible hours

    • Access to computer and high speed Internet connection (ISN can provide limited desktop computer/office access should it be needed).
